Gary August has developed a well-deserved reputation for helping business and government move forward by removing roadblocks that impede progress.

That’s why his clients – large global corporations, major industry players, municipalities, and privately held companies – continue to rely on him to navigate and win their most important legal issues.

With a commercial litigation practice that focuses largely on construction, complex litigation, and insurance coverage disputes, Gary’s accomplishments have contributed to some of the most important and impactful projects in the state and the region, which include serving as lead litigation counsel for Northwest Airlines’ construction of the multi-phase $1.6 billion Edward H. McNamara Terminal at Detroit Metropolitan Airport, and in a combined 17 litigated cases defeating over $41 million in claims against the City of Dearborn stemming from failures in its combined sewer overflow project while at the same time recovering over $32 million for the City, including the largest verdict or settlement reported to Michigan Lawyers Weekly in 2010. Furthering his reputation for handling large, complex litigation, Gary represented Wayne County in litigation over its failed and highly publicized Consolidated Jail Project.

His track record of impressive results, top notch advocacy skills, and commitment to his clients’ goals and objectives have earned him recognition as one of the Best Lawyers in America, a Michigan Super Lawyer, a DBusiness Top Lawyer, a Preeminent (AV) Rating by Martindale-Hubbell, a Leading Lawyer by the Law Bulletin Publishing Company, a Michigan Lawyers Weekly Leader in the Law, and in July 2016 Crain’s Detroit Business featured Gary as just one of 14 attorneys in its special report – “The Litigators.”

Additionally, Gary is the former Chairperson of the Michigan Residential Builders’ and Maintenance & Alteration Contractors’ Board, having first been appointed by Democratic Governor Jennifer Granholm in 2007 and re-appointed by Republican Governor Rick Snyder in 2012, and serving until Gary’s term expired in June 2016.

After earning his undergraduate degree, with high honors, from Michigan State University, Gary attended Northwestern Pritzker School of Law in Chicago, where he won the school’s annual moot court competition and rose to a position as Associate Note & Comment Editor of the Northwestern University Law Review before earning his law degree, cum laude, in 1993.

Despite being heavily recruited to practice with top law firms in New York, Chicago, and elsewhere, he chose to return to Michigan where he was born and raised in order to build a litigation firm with seasoned and credentialed attorneys known for creativity, intellect, personal service, and the ability to take on the most complicated legal matters.
